Individual Therapy

What to expect from the first individual therapy session

The first session focuses on establishing rapport, discussing the confidentiality aspects of therapy and beginning the assessment of your main issues and symptoms. It is the beginning of developing a supportive, warm and collaborative therapy relationship which is necessary for the therapy process to be effective. There will be some paper work to fill-out including a consent form and screening questionnaire about your mood (I use a DASS21 screening measure).

Most clients feel a degree of anxiety and ambivalence initially which is normal and to be expected. Like anything new this can be confronting and can take a few sessions to get used to. I am experienced in helping clients gradually become oriented to these emotions whilst developing a safe therapy plan. The first few sessions have a more structured nature as we need to explore and identify specific aspects of functioning and symptoms. This is information is essential for establishing diagnosis and tailoring treatment goals to your specific therapy needs. Once we have an opportunity to discuss your diagnosis I will be talking you through the most evidence based indicated treatment options. We will also be discussing and identifying your treatment goals and collaboratively deciding on a treatment plan and objectives.

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes.

*Given the nature of the therapy setup as well as my duty of care, if you are in a crisis at the time of attending a session- this will take precedence and we will be focusing on crisis and safety planning as an immediate priority.

How many sessions will I need?

The length of the therapy process varies individually and is dependent on a variety of factors including the diagnosis, current symptoms, stressors and environmental and health stressors to name a few. I work with the client to tailor therapy to suit their needs and preferences.

Broadly speaking the therapy process can be categorised into short to medium term for skills based interventions (targeting coping skills and problem solving) and the general quality of life issues whilst long term therapy is more suited for complex issues (including complex mood, interpersonal and relationship issues).

Referral pathway

You do not require a referral to see a psychologist but without a referral you will not be eligible for a Medicare rebate. If would like to see whether you are eligible for referral under a Mental Health Care Plan you will need to speak with your GP or a psychiatrist prior to making your first appointment. If you have a referral from a GP or a psychiatrist for a Mental Health Care Plan you will be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate of $141.85 (for a clinical psychologist) per individual session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. You can process your rebate on the Medicare website with the receipt that I will issue to you following your payment for the session (provided you have a current referral).

Private Health Insurance

If you have private health insurance that includes psychological therapy as extras cover you may be eligible for a partial rebate. It is recommended that you contact your individual insurance provider for further information about your individual coverage.

*Unfortunately, we do not currently see clients through third parties including WorkCover, TAC, Victims of Crime, ATAPS, Employee Assistance Programs.

*Psychology Hub Melbourne does not offer reports for legal or insurance purposes.
