The title of ‘Psychologist’ is a legally protected title, psychologists require a set of qualifications to practice under Australian law. There are several types of psychologist, all psychologist’s in Australia hold general registration with AHPRA (Psychology Board of Australia). In order to satisfy registration requirements, a psychologist usually completes at minimum 6 years of tertiary qualifications combined with internships. Psychologists must apply to register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) on a yearly basis. Ongoing registration requires the psychologist to complete at least 30 hours of training and professional development.

A psychologist with an area of practice endorsement usually has additional university qualifications and supervised training in that specific area. 

Clinical Psychologists provide a range of psychological services to individuals across the lifespan and treat mental health diagnoses ranging from mild to complex. Most Clinical Psychologists are trained in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental conditions. 

Psychological Therapy is the process of engagement and application of psychological interventions in order to address specific issues whilst utilising scientifically proven methods. Psychological therapy includes individual therapy, group therapy and couples therapy/family therapy.
